Passively Persuasive
The article 400 Rally Against Reservation Expansion, from the New York Times presents a single-sided view of a conflict arising between the Pequot tribe and the local residents of Mashantucket regarding expansion in real estate. The author utilizes repetition, reasons why and social proof as persuasive methods to sway the audience to a particular point of view. It is clear from the style of writing that the author sides with the local residents, citing only their complaints while dismissing rebuttals from the opposing side. The author repeatedly states that the tribe’s plans would hurt the residents, gives specific reasons why this expansion would be detrimental and provides quotes from citizens serving as social proof. I personally would not be persuaded by this article, as I feel that it does not properly or fully address the situation; it is too prejudiced and does not paint a clear or concise picture.
